MARRY THE NIGHT / Lady Gaga

First impression: it’s great. But, one thing I noticed is that there’s some sort of disconnect with the beginning where she just narrates and the actual music video. When you first see her hanging from the roof of the car, I found it sort of disjointed from the whole thing. It wasn’t even in the same aesthetic as the part before. Or maybe there just wasn’t a proper transition. I think I’ll just love it more and more as I watch it (I’ve watched it just once as I’m writing this), but I was kind of expecting more. I thought that the video would be about her and the city, just like how she described her relationship with New York on her interview with MTV, but it’s really just about her beginnings. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong; I just expected the wrong thing, I guess.

The Prelude Pathétique and the last two or three minutes were the best parts of it, in my opinion. I would’ve liked more scenes that really depicted her story (which I thought was the whole point of it anyway). A tad too much in the dance studio, I think. It’s not even her first sort of thing —she was always a singer first and foremost, even Gaga herself said so. The scene was still nice though. Haha.

Anyway, in an aesthetic view, I absolutely love the choreography! I danced Born This Way for my last Michaelmas this year and I oh how I wish that I had another one next year to dance this. It looks so fun. And, the fashion!! Styling is great as usual. The platform pointe shoes are fucking insane. Also, the last few outfits she was wearing when she was getting out of her house did not get enough air time. Boo. But — the most amazing of them all — Kermit Tesoro x Leeroy New!! I am beaming with joy for the Philippine fashion industry. Kudos.

That’s about it for now. Haha.

Kanye West x Bon Iver — Lost in the World

Filmmaker Ruth Hgben collaborates with award-winning musician Kanye West to create a film for his single Lost in the World. The song, which features Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, is taken from West’s fifth album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Even though the album was released in 2010, Kanye has only just revealed the corresponding music video. Hogben’s piece breaks the mould of popular rap aesthetics while still celebrating the extraordinary talent that has made West a modern icon.

I first saw this about a week ago on Cru’s blog, and at first I thought it was a bit off, but it has most definitely grown on me. I was pretty excited to watch it the first time since this song is one of my favorites from the album. I really love that it’s not your run-of-the-mill hip-hop video and more like a down right fashion film. Not what I expected at all. And Ruth Hogben is amazing. Bow.

A lot of people scoff off Kanye’s efforts not related to his music, but him trying to branch out and doing new things is the thing I admire most about him. Sure, he’s an asshole and all, but when a guy’s trying to broaden the perspective of masses of people and trying to put some sort of depth into a genre that’s mostly known for its lyrics about sex, drugs and money, you gotta give some credit where it’s due. I mean, just look at this clip. It’s not just about changing the current trend or trying to stand out, it’s about changing the consciousness. The way we look at things. And if that twitter speech of his a few months ago was any indication, this guy’s pretty passionate. He’s got the resources to help realize all of what he said there, so if he’s damn serious about DONDA, it’s not gonna impossible to conquer the world. I mean, he already started on the fashion industry (not quite there yet on that, but it’s a start).

If we keep seeing this kind of work from Mr. West (and more mainstream artists, hopefully), we’ll get to witness a revolution in pop culture bigger than when rappers switched from baggy jeans and jerseys to sharp suits and high fashion garb and lyrical references (what’s that jacket, Margiela?). Should be exciting.
